What is Low-E Glass?

Low-E glass, which stands for “low-emissivity” glass, is primarily used to improve the energy efficiency of windows by minimizing heat transfer, allowing natural light to pass through while reflecting infrared heat or radiation to keep a building cooler in summer and warmer in winter, thus reducing heating and cooling costs.

Low-E glass has a microscopic coating applied to one side of the glass that selectively reflects infrared radiation while allowing visible light to pass through.

The benefits of Low-E glass is that it helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature by reducing heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter while helping to reduce energy costs. The life of a home’s air conditioner and furnace can also be extended and also reduce the need for air conditioning. Low-E glass can also help to protect the furniture fom damage caused by UV rays.

Low-emissivity glass is most commonly used in windows for residential and commercial buildings. Low-E glass is often used in double glazed windows. Passive low-e coatings are designed to maximize solar heat gain into the home. Solar control low-e coatings are also available.
